DESCRIPTION:If you are interested in history\, here’s your opportunity to stimulate those “grey cells” over the summer months and perhaps even meet some like minded folk over a cuppa and a biscuit. Thanks to the award of a Hull Maritime Community Grant\, Yorkshire Waterways Heritage Society is running a series of twenty heritage workshops at Goole Museum during the spring and summer of 2024. \nEvery Tuesday\, a busy three hour session will run from 10am to 1pm\, combining an opportunity for visitors to raise questions about their own ancestors\, perhaps donate photographs or stories for inclusion on our website and have a look at some of the new stuff we will be publishing during 2024.  You’ll maybe learn some new tricks and perhaps how you too can help us to illuminate the lives of the hard working watermen who plied their trade on the waterways of 19th and 20th century Yorkshire.  \nNo appointment is needed although each workshop will have a 30 minute presentation starting at 11am which you won’t want to miss. Each presentation will feature a topic of interest and explore how our volunteers have researched\, captured and published what has been discovered. \nThis week’s presentation \nToday we will be looking at what we are doing with the 1921 Census. Since mid 2023\, volunteers have been using this online census to identify all those working and living on Yorkshire’s waterways. What they have found is being captured in a database which will allow us to publish the findings on our website. We’ll show you how.  \nOur computers will have access to the main family history websites. Light refreshments will be available.

The newspapers are a great source of contemporaneous reports on so many aspects of the lives of the watermen. Some sad stories\, some happy stories but all shining a light on what was going on in their lives over the past 250 years. We are creating an online place where everyone can contribute to a searchable record which will be there for current and future generations to come. We’ll show you how.  \nOur computers will have access to the main family history websites. Light refreshments will be available.

Supported by photos\, video\, music and even props – this is an intimate experience for fans of canals\, alternative living and storytelling. \nAs a narrowboater\, Robbie is world renowned. Canal Boat Diaries can be seen on BBC Four and Yesterday channels. This vlog-style documentary is all about life on the canals in the Midlands and North West of England and was the first time a documentary of its kind was shot using a mobile phone as the main camera. Robbie also edited some of the footage from inside his 40 year old narrowboat. SUMMARY:Goole By Barge Exhibition by Rich and Lou Duffy-Howard
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition of photographs\, videos and music\, documents the artists’ two-day journey from Hull to York\, via Goole on the working barge\, George Dyson. It is the latest chapter in Rich and Lou’s Open Bridges project (www.openbridgeshull.com).  \n\nGoole by Barge documents our trip on January 24th and 25th 2020 when we were passengers on the Deans Marine Services barge George Dyson. We accompanied vessel owner and skipper John Dean who owns the last remaining working dry dock on the River Hull on a two day working voyage from Hull’s Albert Dock to York\, with the job of removing hundreds of years of rubble from its city centre 15th century Guildhall on the banks of the Ouse. \nThe destination on the first day\, on a high tide\, was the port of Goole. John drove the barge into the sunset\, mooring in Aldam Dock just before seven. A few hours later\, before first light on the next tide\, Goole was the start of the next day’s adventure. Goole became central to the journey and exhibition\, depicting the town as both crossroad and harbour for road\, rail and river workers and travellers. \nRich photographed the journey from the barge and explained\, “Taking photographs in low light without a flash is always a challenge especially at night on a moving barge. I wanted to capture the stillness and silence of Goole docks away from the daily bustle”. \n\nAs well as 60 of Rich’s photographs you can see three videos and soundtracks made by Lou\, ‘The George Dyson Entering Ocean Lock’\, ‘The Goole Captain’ and ‘The Scenic Route to York.
