Flipbook: Richard Dunston…almost a Century of Shipbuilding
Richard Dunston Limited...almost a Century of Shipbuilding
This fascinating book is believed to date from around 1954. The high quality suggests it was produced for presentation to potential customers.
This copy, generously loaned to the Society by David Irvin, was owned by his late father, Alan Irvin, who was foreman joiner up to the time Richard Dunston’s Thorne shipyard closed in 1983. It is not known whether some employees were presented with copies after 1954 or if this copy was salvaged after the firm had closed.
By 1954, Richard Dunston Ltd had long acquired Henry Scarr’s shipbuilding business at Hessle on the banks of the Humber so the book contains photographs of vessels built at both yards. You will see that we have left in place some pencilled annotations of “Thorne” to help the viewer understand at which yard they were built. We’re guessing that this was Alan’s work, still with us today.
We acknowledge that copyright images are being shown for which no explicit permission to publish has been given to this Society. Many of the digital images shown had originally been produced with the knowledge and permission of the now defunct Yorkshire Waterways Museum from original photographs deposited there for public display. Following the closure of that organisation in 2019 and the break up of their collection those original photographs have disappeared and have effectively been lost to the public.
Through an incredible stroke of good fortune digital copies of those images were donated to this Society in 2022 allowing our volunteers to finally achieve the wishes of those photographers and collectors who had made the original donations.
