Reports for Family Historians

Introduction

Family history research thrives on dates and places but the key bits of information we genealogists need to see are family names. This section of our website may just give you what you need to fill in some of the blanks regarding your watermen ancestors.

When any of us undertake research in depth into any complex subject it is usual for us to record our findings in a database. Once upon a time that might have been a notebook or a collection of handwritten cards but more commonly today it will be a computer database or perhaps a spreadsheet. Those record repositories hold information, which although perhaps collected many years ago, remains relevant to new generations of historian today. We believe that whenever possible the data that had been collected should be published for others to examine. The alternative would be to repeat the same research which would typically take many, many hours, if not years, of effort.

Making that data available to others, given the large variety of databases and spreadsheets out there, could be technically challenging and expensive. The YWHS way is to, whenever possible, keep things simple so we aim to regenerate such valuable reports in Portable Document Format (PDF). With the tools available to us we are then able to publish those reports which, combined with simple search facilities, we think will address most of our viewers needs.

The Collection

It is early days in the curation of these reports so there are only a few to see so far. David Scrimgeour’s 1881 census database offers you the opportunity to look at the data collected for Yorkshire’s watermen appearing in that census. Ron Gosney amassed a significant collection of data from 1850/51 when researching mariners from Knottingley, Yorkshire and two views of his records are shared below.

Watermen Aboard Vessels in the 1881 Census

Research was undertaken in 2020/21 into this census for the purpose of identifying and recording every waterman plying his trade on Yorkshire’s canals and rivers. This report lists every vessel found in the census and tells you who was onboard. The report is sorted into ascending surname order and contains 1,027 entries.

Watermen Ashore in the 1881 Census

Research was undertaken in 2020/21 into this census for the purpose of identifying and recording every waterman plying his trade on Yorkshire’s canals and rivers. This report, lists every waterman found in a household in the census. Each record notes who else was in the household. The report is sorted into ascending surname order and contains 1,300 entries.

Goole Registered Ships with Crews, 1850

Transcribed in 2001 by Knottingley historian Ron Gosney this report consolidates under each ship the information regarding crew members submitted by the ships master in half-yearly returns. The report is in ship name sequence.

Crew Members of Goole Registered Ships, 1851

Believed to have been transcribed in 2001 by Knottingley historian Ron Gosney this report lists by crewman’s surname  every seaman found on Goole registered ships in 1851.  There are a total of 2,603 records.

 Publication permission for copyright images

We acknowledge that copyright images are being shown for which no explicit permission to publish has been given to this Society. Many of the digital images shown had originally been produced with the knowledge and permission of the now defunct Yorkshire Waterways Museum from original photographs deposited there for public display.  Following the closure of that organisation in 2019 and the break up of their collection those original photographs have disappeared and have effectively been lost to the public.

Through an incredible stroke of good fortune digital copies of those images were donated to this Society in 2022 allowing our volunteers to finally achieve the wishes of those photographers and collectors who had made the original donations.

If you are the copyright holder and would like to contact the Society please use the form below.
